An introduction to shade selection
LIGHT AND COLOR
Light is an electromagnetic radiation in the optical region that is capable of stimulating the eye, the range of wavelengths being 380 nm to 760 nm. When light stimulates the eye, a pattern of physiological perception is aroused. The perceptions are related to the distribution of light in the retinal image in terms of space, time, and spectral power distribution.
The light coming from an object must therefore be treated as coming from a uniform element of area and as constant in respect time. However, when tooth which has an awkward three-dimensional shape, with texture or marking and differences in gloss or size, it is difficult for any human observers - dentists are no exception - to match color.
In such a situation even photoelectric instruments may not be capable of giving a valid color specification.
